Jungle Cruise, formally named Jungle River Cruise, is a riverboat amusement ride located in the Adventureland themed section at various Disney theme parks worldwide. The attraction is a simulated riverboat cruise that travels along a waterway using a concealed guidance system through areas with Asian, African, and South American themes. Park guests board replica steam launches from a 1930s British explorers' lodge, and Audio-Animatronic exotic animals are displayed throughout the ride. A live Disney cast member acts as a tour guide and boat skipper that loosely follows a rehearsed script, providing passengers with a comedic narrative.
How Many Boats Are in Jungle Cruise Ride?
The cruise concludes after the boat narrowly avoids being sprayed by water from one of the elephants. The queue of the Jungle Cruise is heavily themed with period artifacts, tools, gear, photos and more. It is intended to resemble a colonial outpost where an exploration of the jungle rivers may be booked. It is divided into four main sections which may be opened or closed in sequence to accommodate crowd fluctuation. The queue was designed to wind about extensively so that guests may see all of the different artifacts in the queue.

The boats then pass by more chimpanzees who have raided the box of butterflies. While I was very happy with the quality of the Viking Tour guides - they both were excellent, - the larges coaches that Viking uses are just unable to deal with the massive amount of traffic in STP. We spent almost 2x the amount of time more time on the bus sitting than touring the various sites. I had spent several weeks in STP years earlier on business, bit if this has been my first - or only time in STP... It's well worth the $$$ in to use the private tours with the small vans or mini busses... The overlay was so successful that it was greatly expanded for 2014, and remained in both parks through 2016.
Instead, the boats are propelled along the predetermined track by an underwater system, giving the illusion that the skippers are skillfully navigating through the dense foliage and treacherous waters. This hidden mechanism ensures the safety of both the guests and the skippers while adding to the magical and immersive experience of the Jungle Cruise. Behind the scenes, a team of technicians and engineers work tirelessly to maintain and operate this intricate system, ensuring that every boat glides smoothly along it’s designated route. While the skippers may not have direct control over the steering, their charismatic commentary and comedic timing are what truly bring the Jungle Cruise to life.
We were originally scheduled for Lyttleton, where we had a great private tour planned, but when they switched us to Akaroa, the 90 mins drive to Christchurch, just didn't make private tours viable. So we switched to ship tours, the included in the AM and punting on the Avon in PM. We did the included excursion and had a hopeless guide, so our review would not have been favourable. The Jungle Cruise’s status as one of Disney’s premier attractions was further solidified when a version of the ride opened with Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom in 1971.
There was no ad-libbed humor from the skippers, who played the entire experience straight. Disney World’s commitment to promoting a more inclusive experience is evident in the modifications made to the Jungle Cruise. The ride has removed outdated stereotypes and insensitive jokes, replaced certain animatronic animals, and introduced new scenes to reflect a more culturally sensitive perspective.
Once aboard the boats, guests are introduced to their skipper and they head into the jungle, allegedly never to return. Passengers then glide precariously under the first of a pair of stone arches severely damaged by an earthquake centuries ago. These are part of the ruins of an ancient Cambodian city where a crumbling temple is one of the few things which have managed to avoid tumbling into the river. Here passengers see an Indochinese tiger, giant spiders, king cobras and mugger crocodiles. Passing a statue of a bowing elephant, the boats pass under the second arch and enter the Sacred Indian Elephant Bathing Pool. Here a large herd of Indian elephants frolic and squirt water at the passing vessels.
However, as the park’s first decade came to a close, Walt Disney felt his park needed some new blood. According to legend, he once overheard a child ask his mother to ride the Jungle Cruise and was aghast when the mother responded that they’d ridden it last time and didn’t need to again. Whether this story is apocryphal or not, in the early 1960s Walt brought over animator Marc Davis from the Studios to “plus up” some of Disneyland’s attractions. The Jungle Cruise attraction at Disney World has seen numerous updates and enhancements over the years, aiming to provide guests with an even more immersive and engaging experience.
